Overview
- Time: 20 minutes
- Word count: At least 150 words
- Task: Describe visual information (graphs, charts, diagrams, maps)
Task 1 Structure
1. Introduction (1 sentence)
Paraphrase the question using different words.
Example:
- Question: "The chart shows the number of students studying different subjects."
- Introduction: "The chart illustrates the quantity of pupils enrolled in various academic disciplines."
2. Overview (1-2 sentences)
Identify the main trends or most significant features.
Example:
"Overall, Science subjects attracted the highest number of students, while Arts subjects had the lowest enrollment figures throughout the period."
3. Body Paragraphs (2 paragraphs)
Describe specific details and data, grouping similar information.
Key Language for Task 1
Describing Trends
- Increase: rise, grow, climb, surge, soar, jump
- Decrease: fall, drop, decline, plummet, dip, slide
- Stability: remain stable, stay constant, plateau, level off
- Fluctuation: fluctuate, vary, oscillate
Describing Data
- Highest: peak, maximum, top, summit
- Lowest: minimum, bottom, trough
- Comparison: whereas, while, in contrast, similarly, likewise
Time Expressions
- from 2000 to 2020
- between 2005 and 2010
- over the period
- during the first half
- by the end of
Common Chart Types
Line Graphs
Show changes over time. Focus on trends, peaks, and significant changes.
Bar Charts
Compare different categories. Look for highest/lowest values and significant differences.
Pie Charts
Show proportions of a whole. Focus on largest/smallest segments and notable percentages.
Tables
Present numerical data. Look for patterns, trends, and comparisons across categories.
