IELTS Speaking Test Overview
IELTS Speaking Test Structure
The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner lasting 11-14 minutes.
Part 1: Introduction and Interview (4-5 minutes)
Format
- Examiner introduces themselves and confirms your identity
- Questions about familiar topics: home, family, work, studies, interests
- 2-3 topic areas with 3-4 questions each
Sample Topics
- Your hometown
- Your job or studies
- Hobbies and interests
- Daily routines
- Food and cooking
- Travel and holidays
Part 2: Long Turn (3-4 minutes)
Format
- You receive a task card with a topic
- 1 minute preparation time (you can make notes)
- Speak for 1-2 minutes on the topic
- Examiner may ask 1-2 follow-up questions
Task Card Structure
Each card has a main topic and 3-4 bullet points to guide your talk:
- What/Who/Where/When
- Why it's important/special
- How you feel about it
Part 3: Discussion (4-5 minutes)
Format
- Abstract discussion related to Part 2 topic
- More complex questions requiring analysis and evaluation
- Express and justify opinions
- Compare past, present, and future
Assessment Criteria
Fluency and Coherence (25%)
- Speak at length without hesitation
- Use linking words effectively
- Organize ideas logically
Lexical Resource (25%)
- Use a wide range of vocabulary
- Use vocabulary naturally and appropriately
- Attempt to use less common words
Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%)
- Use a variety of sentence structures
- Make few grammatical errors
- Use complex grammar appropriately
Pronunciation (25%)
- Be easily understood
- Use appropriate stress and intonation
- Pronounce sounds clearly

Examples
Part 1 Example - Hobbies
Examiner: "Do you have any hobbies?"
Band 5 Answer: "Yes, I like reading."
Band 7 Answer: "Yes, I'm quite passionate about reading, actually. I particularly enjoy mystery novels and biographies. I find that reading helps me relax after a long day at work, and it's also a great way to improve my vocabulary and learn about different cultures and perspectives."
Analysis:
- Band 7 answer is longer and more detailed
- Uses sophisticated vocabulary ("passionate", "particularly")
- Gives specific examples (mystery novels, biographies)
- Explains reasons and benefits
- Shows personal reflection
Notice how the higher band answer provides more detail, uses varied vocabulary, and gives reasons for preferences.
Tips for Success
- Extend your answers with examples and reasons
- Use a variety of tenses naturally
- Don't memorize answers - be natural
- Ask for clarification if you don't understand
- Stay calm and confident
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Giving very short answers in Part 1
- Memorizing and reciting prepared answers
- Not using the full time in Part 2
- Going off-topic
- Speaking too quietly or too fast
