Introduction to IELTS Reading
The IELTS Reading test consists of 40 questions based on three reading passages. You have 60 minutes to complete all sections.
Test Format
- Academic Reading: Three long texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers
- General Training: Extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines
Common Question Types
1. Multiple Choice Questions
Choose the correct answer from three or four options (A, B, C, or D).
2. True/False/Not Given
Decide if the statement agrees with the information in the text (True), contradicts it (False), or if there is no information (Not Given).
3. Matching Headings
Match headings to paragraphs or sections of the text.
4. Gap Fill
Complete sentences or summaries using words from the text.
Basic Reading Strategies
Skimming
Read quickly to get the general idea. Focus on:
- Title and headings
- First and last paragraphs
- First sentence of each paragraph
- Keywords and phrases
Scanning
Look for specific information quickly:
- Names, dates, numbers
- Specific facts or details
- Keywords from questions
